So how can one bring traffic to their web site? That was the question I posed to a number of regular internet marketing professionals. Wow was I surprised at the number of different answers I received! It was obvious that some of the methods were only useful for niche sites, but the majority of the answers would work for any site.
One of the more obvious answers I received was content and therefore should be the first method explored in this series. I doubt anyone reading this is going WOW at that. Probably more like ugggg. Content is work. Well wake up all you "get rich quickies" out there! The people that do this stuff for a living work at it. The one thing that will get people to your site and continue to draw them back is what they find on your site. You can spend a fortune with AdWords getting people to come to your site. If there's nothing there worth staying for then they will not stay and it will be very expensive to get them to visit because there is really no reason for them to be there.
What kind of content do you need? Of course that depends on the site and the people you are trying to attract. Chances are you started your site to share something. Maybe you have a product to sell or possibly a service. Your content needs to reflect this. If you are selling training, then you need to have articles on the subject or possibly videos. Anything that keeps people on your site when they get there will also attract them to the site. The more useful and pertinent information you have on your site, the more the search engines will think your site is useful for people searching on that subject. In addition the more useful information on your site concerning your subject matter, the more other website owners, forum users, etc will want to link to it. Keep in mind that unless you have a treasure trove of past articles or other material, this is a long term process. It will not happen over night. You will slowly over time develop articles, videos, forums - anything to serve the visitor of your site. Over time your site will be recognized by the search engines and visitors alike as a place to go for your subject. People think the internet and web sites are so different from traditional brick and mortar businesses in this respect. Actually many of the same principles apply. You have to give people a reason to visit. An empty website gets the same reaction that an empty shopping center would. There is simply no reason to go there.
So remember - first tip: Content is King!
